Visitor rules

Which words fill in for each visitor?

Write {store}, {product}, {country} or {state} in a rule's words and each visitor reads the real name: the other store, the product, their country or their state/province.

Type any of these words, curly brackets included, in a rule's title, message or buttons. Each visitor reads the real value instead. They work in every language you translate the rule into.

Store name

  • {store} becomes the name of the store the rule sends visitors to.
  • Works in: the product text, the cart and checkout messages, and the message shown when checkout is refused.
  • When it can't be filled: a Notice rule sends nobody anywhere, so its checkout refusal cannot use it.

Product name

  • {product} becomes the name of the product the visitor is looking at.
  • Works in: the product text of a rule that offers the same product on your linked store.

Country

  • {country} becomes the visitor's country, in their language: "Germany" to an English reader, "Allemagne" to a French one.
  • Works in: banners, popups and notices; the product text; the cart message; the checkout message (Shopify Plus).
  • When it can't be filled: that line shows its default text instead (a notice simply leaves it out). It cannot be used in the message shown when checkout is refused.

State/province

  • {state} or {province} becomes the visitor's state/province: "California", "Ontario".
  • Works in: banners, popups and notices, and the product text. Not in cart or checkout messages.
  • When it can't be filled: that line shows its default text instead. A visitor's state/province is known only when their browser tells your store where they are; when only the country is known, the default text is shown.
  • Needs: the rule to name at least one country under Who sees it. One rule can use up to 300 states/provinces, so a rule for many countries picks its states/provinces there.

Place names are in English unless your store's language has its own name for the place, as French has for England. The preview on a rule's Customize screen fills each word for the country it shows.

Questions and answers

Can I write {province} instead of {state}?
Yes. {state} and {province} mean the same thing: the visitor's state/province.
Will a visitor ever see {country} or {state} written out?
No. When SignalLane can't tell the place, that line shows its default text instead.
Why can't I use {state} at checkout?
The cart and the checkout don't know a shopper's state/province, so a cart or checkout message can use {country} but not {state}.
