Visitor rules

What happens when two rules match the same visitor?

The rule with the lowest Priority number wins and is the only one that acts on that page. Answers to a banner, once-per-session redirects and loop limits decide the rest.

When more than one rule matches a visitor, the rule with the lowest Priority number wins, and it is the only rule that acts on that page. A visitor never gets two redirects, or a redirect and a banner, from one page view.

How the winner is chosen

SignalLane goes through your active rules from the lowest priority number to the highest and stops at the first one whose conditions all match: countries, states/provinces, browser languages, pages and referring site. A new rule starts at 100. Give a narrow rule a lower number than a broad one, so "Visitors from Quebec" is checked before "Visitors from Canada".

Once a visitor has answered

Going, staying or closing a banner is an answer. Each rule remembers its own answer. Once a visitor has answered a rule, a lower-priority rule does not act on the same page instead, so saying "stay" to your first rule never brings up your second.

  • Ask again each time they come back to your store (the default): the banner is not shown again within the visit, and is shown again on the next one.
  • Remember their answer for 1–365 days: the visitor is not asked for that long, if they allowed your store to save preferences. Without that permission they are asked again each time they come back.
  • Closing the banner is only remembered for that visit.

Redirects and loops

  • Redirect at most once per session (Instant rules only, under Advanced): a visitor who returns to your store in the same visit stays.
  • A visitor who arrived through one of SignalLane's own links is not sent on again from that page.
  • SignalLane limits how often one visitor is redirected in a visit, so two stores pointing at each other can never bounce someone back and forth.

Two exceptions to "lowest number wins"

A blocking notice

A Notice rule with Block browsing on must show on every page it matches. If the visitor has already answered the winning rule, SignalLane looks for a blocking notice that matches before it gives up. Answering another rule never gets a visitor past a blocking notice.

Sold-out offers

A rule with Only when it's sold out here is checked after all your other rules, whatever its priority. If another rule matches the visitor first, that rule acts and this one is not asked. With two of these rules, only the first that matches the visitor is asked, so order them, or give each its own countries.

Within one rule

A country cannot be in both Visitor countries and Except countries of the same rule; Save stays off until you remove the overlap. In Which pages, a path in Never on these paths wins over the same path in Only on these paths.

The cart and checkout use the same order: when the first matching rule points at a store that does not sell or ship to the buyer, they try your next matching rule. Suggest the other store.

Questions and answers

Two of my rules have the same priority. Which runs?
The one created first is checked first. Give each rule its own number so the order is one you chose, not an accident of when you made them.
If I switch a rule from Remember to Ask again, are old answers cleared?
No. Switching to Ask again, or shortening the days, does not clear answers visitors already gave: they keep them until they expire.
