Can a rule depend on the referring site, browser language or page?
Yes. A rule can match only visitors coming from certain sites, only browsers set to certain languages, and only certain pages of your store. Empty means any.
Yes. Besides countries, a rule can be narrowed by the site a visitor came from (Only visitors coming from, under Advanced), the languages set in their browser (Browser languages, under Who sees it), and the page they are on (Which pages). Every field left empty matches anything. A rule runs only when all of its conditions match.
Referring site
Only visitors coming from takes domains separated by commas, such as ads.example.com. A domain also covers its subdomains: example.com matches a visitor coming from ads.example.com. Leave it empty to match any visitor.
Use it for a partner or a campaign landing: "visitors coming from our reseller's site see a banner pointing to the wholesale store".
Browser languages
Type language codes, such as en or fr-ca, separated by commas. Leave it empty to match any language.
enalso matchesen-gb, butfr-camatches onlyfr-ca.- It reads the languages set in the visitor's browser, not the language your storefront is showing them.
This is different from writing your banner in several languages. To translate a banner, use the Language selector on the text fields. Translate your own words.
Pages
Only on these paths
A path is what follows your domain. Put one per line. /products/* matches everything under /products/. Without a star a path has to match exactly, so /products/hat is that one page and nothing else. Leave it empty for every page.
A language part at the start of the address, such as /fr on a translated storefront, is ignored, so /products/* also covers /fr/products/hat.
Never on these paths
One per line, written the same way. A path here wins over the list above. Use it to keep a rule off a landing page, a size guide or a contact page.
Combining conditions
Conditions add up: a rule with France in Visitor countries, fr in Browser languages and /collections/* in Only on these paths matches French-language browsers in France on collection pages, and nobody else. When a rule never seems to run, preview it with ?signallane_preview=1: the console says referrer when the referring site was the only condition that did not match.
Questions and answers
- Does a rule with a referring site need countries too?
- No. A rule can match on the referring site alone, and it still runs when SignalLane cannot tell which country the visitor is in.
- Does /products match every product page?
- No. Without a star a path matches exactly. Write /products/* to match everything under /products/.
