Getting started

Which pages does SignalLane never run on?

No rule redirects or shows a banner on the cart, checkout, account and order pages, or Shopify's password and challenge pages. Only the cart suggestion and the store closed page show on the cart.

No SignalLane rule redirects a visitor or shows them a banner or notice on the cart, the checkout, customer account pages, order pages, or Shopify's own password, captcha and challenge pages. These pages are left alone whatever a rule's Which pages settings say.

The pages that are always skipped

  • The cart (/cart). Two things made for the cart do show there: a rule's suggestion in the cart and the store closed page (below).
  • The checkout.
  • Customer accounts and order pages (/account, /orders).
  • Your store's password page, and Shopify's captcha and challenge pages.
  • Gift card pages, and pages served by other apps under /apps and /tools.
  • Your 404 page. Visitor rules do not run there; SignalLane's broken-link features do.

SignalLane also does nothing inside the theme editor, and nothing when your store is shown inside another site's frame.

One feature is different: the store closed page. While you have closed your store, it covers the cart too, so a closed store does not show a cart full of products. It never covers the checkout, account pages, policy pages or Shopify's own password and challenge pages.

Why these pages

Each of them is a page a shopper must be able to finish. Sending someone away from their cart or their checkout loses the order. Covering Shopify's password, captcha or challenge page with a popup would strand a real visitor who is only trying to prove they are human. Account and order pages are where a customer checks a past order, whichever country they are in today.

A blocking notice follows the same rule

A Notice rule can block browsing: the visitor cannot close it. Even then it never shows on these pages. That means it cannot stop an order. A visitor who goes straight to the cart or checkout will not see it, and anyone who turns off JavaScript never sees it at all.

Visitors SignalLane leaves alone

  • Search engine crawlers and other bots, while Skip bots and crawlers is on. Shopify's and Google's speed audits (Lighthouse) are treated as ordinary visitors.
  • A visitor who just arrived through one of SignalLane's own links is not sent on again.
  • SignalLane limits how often one visitor is redirected in a visit, so two stores pointing at each other can never bounce someone back and forth.

What does reach the cart and checkout

Three features work in the cart and checkout because they are built differently, and each is something you switch on:

  • Suggest it in the cart shows a link to your other store above the cart. Suggest the other store.
  • Show a message at checkout is a block you place in the checkout editor (Shopify Plus only).
  • Block checkout and your checkout rules are checked by Shopify when the buyer tries to continue, once you turn SignalLane on in Settings › Checkout › Checkout rules. SignalLane cannot see whether you have.

None of them redirects anyone. The shopper always decides.

Questions and answers

Can I make a rule run on the cart page?
A rule never redirects there. You can turn on "Suggest it in the cart" so the cart shows a link to your other store; the shopper decides.
Does a blocking notice stop someone ordering?
No. It never shows on the cart or checkout, and anyone who turns off JavaScript never sees it. It is a courtesy, not a security control.
