Which cookies does SignalLane set, and how does consent work?
One cookie, only when a rule remembers a shopper's answer and they allowed preferences. Everything else lasts one visit. Shopify runs the pixel only when the shopper's choices allow analytics.
SignalLane sets at most one cookie, and only when the shopper has allowed it. Everything else it keeps in the browser lasts one visit and identifies nobody.
The one cookie
sl_choice_<rule id> remembers a shopper's answer to one banner (go, stay or close) so they are not asked again. It is written only when both are true:
- The rule is set to Remember their answer for 1 to 365 days, under Advanced. The default, Ask again each time they come back to your store, writes no cookie.
- The shopper allowed your store to save preferences, which SignalLane checks through Shopify's Customer Privacy API.
Without that permission, the answer lasts only for the visit and the shopper is asked again next time.
Storage that lasts one visit
SignalLane keeps a few notes in the browser's session storage. The browser clears them when the visit ends. None carries an identifier, and none is sent to SignalLane. You can list them in your cookie policy as:
- The shopper's answer to a banner, for this visit, when no cookie is allowed.
- That this visit was already redirected, and how often, so no one is bounced back and forth.
- The visitor's country, or state/province, for this visit, so it is not looked up on every page.
- Whether a linked store sells a product, so the question is asked once a visit.
- That the shopper closed the cart suggestion, for this visit.
- That a missing page was already reported or redirected, and that its suggestions popup was already shown, this visit.
- While your store is closed: the pass a visitor gets by typing your password, and the page they were sent to once, so they are not sent again in a loop.
- Preview mode, armed only by someone who opens your store with the preview link.
- Only with the Klaviyo integration on: the details last handed to Klaviyo and whether a redirect was recorded, so neither is sent twice.
- At checkout, the checkout message keeps whether a linked store sells each item, and whether the buyer closed the message, in its own storage inside Shopify's checkout.
Counting visitors for your plan's limit writes nothing to the browser. It sends one request when SignalLane acts for a visitor, and only when their privacy choices allow analytics. Visitors routed.
The pixel and consent
SignalLane's pixel declares that it is for analytics. Shopify runs it only when the shopper's privacy choices allow analytics, under your store's own privacy settings, and it is never used for marketing or sold. When a shopper declines, their visit and order are simply not counted. What the pixel sends.
Checkout
On Shopify Plus, the checkout message reports that it was shown only when the buyer allowed analytics, and that report carries nothing about the buyer. When a buyer closes the message, the checkout remembers it with no identifier.
Questions and answers
- Do I need to list SignalLane in my cookie banner?
- SignalLane's choice cookie is a preference cookie, and the pixel is analytics. Both already wait for your shoppers' choices made through Shopify's privacy tools. How you describe them in your own policy is your decision.
- Does SignalLane read Shopify's own cookies?
- No. It never reads or writes Shopify's cookies.
