What do the storefront checks read?
Your robots.txt, sitemap, a product page's data, your policy and contact pages, a weekly sample of more product pages and one sitemap file, and the optional AI files. Read as SignalLane, once a week and when you press Check now.
Open AI readiness, then Storefront checks from the Actions menu or View all storefront checks under the table. SignalLane reads these from your store's public address, as SignalLane, with no account and no cookies, once a week and whenever you press Check now. Nothing here changes your store or your theme.
What your robots.txt allows
Which well-known AI crawlers your robots.txt lets in. Whether each assistant actually reaches your store is not something SignalLane can see. Shopify's default robots.txt blocks none of them, so a block comes from your theme.
Sitemap and product page
- sitemap.xml: whether it answers with a sitemap.
- One product page: which of name, image, price, currency and availability its structured data carries. Check another product picks a different one.
- Conflicting product data: when the page describes the product in ways that contradict each other, the page lists the values.
- Different from your catalogue: the page's price, currency and stock compared with your products as SignalLane last synced them. Information, not an error: market prices, sales and the time since the last sync can explain it.
- How the page asks to be indexed: its canonical link, its robots meta tag and its X-Robots-Tag header, as they are.
Policies and store information
Your shipping, refund and privacy policies, your terms of service and a contact page: whether each answers and has real text (a contact form counts on the contact page). The contact page is /pages/contact, or, if you let SignalLane read your pages, the published page that uses your theme's contact template.
More product pages and your sitemap
Each weekly check also reads a sample of your other product pages and your sitemap. Products hidden from search engines are left out. A table lists each page read, what it found and when. For your sitemap, the section shows how much of your sitemap SignalLane has checked so far, how many published products it did not find in it, and how many products it links to that are not live. These are things to look into, not errors: Shopify leaves some products out on purpose, and products published in the last two days are not counted. Nothing is compared until SignalLane's copy of your products is complete. The weekly check reads only a handful of pages on your store.
Optional AI information files
SignalLane asks your store for /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt and says whether each answers with a text file. Use varies by AI service. Beside each file it says whether it looks like Shopify's default or your theme's own version; that is a guess from the file, not a verdict.
When SignalLane cannot read
SignalLane follows your robots.txt, so a page it asks SignalLane not to read is not read. A bot check, or a page that is not what was expected, reads as "could not check", never as a problem with your store. A password-protected storefront can be read by no assistant, and the page says so. The weekly check reads nothing else when it cannot read your robots.txt; a check you start reads the rest anyway.
Emails
The summary email lists what changed on your storefront since the check before, and says nothing when nothing changed. Two optional alerts, off until you turn them on in Settings › Notifications, tell you when your robots.txt newly asks AI crawlers not to read your store, and when a product page loses its product data.
Questions and answers
- Does Check now read the weekly sample too?
- No. Check now reads robots.txt, your sitemap, one product page, your policy and contact pages and the optional files. The extra product pages and the sitemap file are read only by the weekly check.
- Why does it say SignalLane did not read my policy pages?
- Shopify's standard robots.txt asks every crawler not to read /policies/. SignalLane follows your robots.txt, so while that rule is there it does not read them.
